When our children are suffering it has a significant effect on the home and family. Reaching out for help is the first step towards a relief and progress. Something that can help ease the stress of finding the “right” person to help you and child. Scheduling consultations with two or three professionals can help ease the decision making process. Feel free to ask questions not only during initial consulting but throughout the therapeutic process.
Sessions will look different for different children and will depend on the therapeutic goals agreed upon through collaboration with you as the parent, the child client and the therapist. Sovereignty Counseling Services works from a systemic philosophy. This means that therapy for your child will look like individual sessions with your child and brief confrencing with you at the beginning or end of the session. Family sessions with the child, parents or other family members may be utilized. Family sessions where the therapist meets with the parents only may be utilized as well .
Building a trusting relationship will be the first phase of therapy. This can look like games and different activities to get to know one another. Hopefully transitioning to working on therapeutic goals will feel natural and comfortable to your child. The goal is to return a child who is emotionally regulated as much as possible. Some days they may even return from session and say “therapy was fun!” Other days may be more difficult and your child may need some down time or help utilizing regulating skills. You will be kept in the loop as to how you can best support your child throughout the therapeutic process.
